Know Their Names

Help us honour the South Vancouver veterans of the First World War

Did someone in your family serve?

South Vancouver’s cenotaph proudly stands in Memorial Park South as a symbolic nod to those, from this neighbourhood, who served in the First World War – men whose families and neighbours knew exactly who they were.

The Cenotaph holds no names. We’d like to change that.

The Project

In the course of recent research and outreach, South Vancouver residents came forward to say that family members who served in the First World War have no public acknowledgement near the cenotaph built to honour them.

The Veterans Recognition Project is our response. We’ll gather what families and researchers know, verify it through official records, and publish the names on this website – a public record of who the cenotaph represents.

Currently Investigating

Pte. Charles Swinton Digby

Charles was born in Brandon, Manitoba and recruited in Vancouver Municipality in 1918. Like many who volunteered or were recruited from South Vancouver, he served in the 7th Canadian Infantry Battalion, B.C Regiment, CEF.

We are working with his family to document his service and his remarkable post-war contribution to Vancouver’s Legion community. More soon.
